I spent most of last week working from Shakamak, an out-of-the-way state park with not a lot to do in our summer of COVID, but someplace I’m quite fond of.

Although the roads in that part of the state don’t offer the hilly, curvy aesthetics I’m fondest of, I still enjoy exploring any heavily rural areas.

Not all of these photos are from that immediate area, !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! , and took quite the roundabout way to get there.

My best find this trip was !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! , which barely !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! , but is an absolute gem, with over 100 lakes, and miles and miles of scenic gravel roads.

I actually “discovered” Greene-Sullivan twice.

I went to a nature preserve called Goose Pond one afternoon, changed my mind about hiking around when I found two ticks crawling on me and realized I didn’t have my tick repellent handy, and upon examining my maps noticed that some interesting curvy roads and lakes lay just outside the preserve.

Two days later I was wandering aimlessly, saw on my maps what looked like an interesting loop I could drive, and realized once I got there I was back at Greene-Sullivan.

Anyway, great trip, even got to spend some time with my father and step-mom who have been painfully bored during the pandemic and decided to follow me down there to rent a neighboring cabin.

So, at least they got to be bored somewhere other than home.

And on with the pics. Details in the captions because I didn’t feel like doing my usual Kinja shuffling of pics and text to get everything organized.

Can a photo be considered clickbait? Because I definitely wanted this highlighted to draw people in. Swoon.

I have a working theory that every warning sign is an invitation to someone. This...this is for me.

Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!!

There is a really cool house with lots of interesting art along the road. This is one edge of the property.

Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!!

Yes...yes it was.

The Tulip Trestle is one of the world’s longest viaducts. In the days before GPS was widely available, I found it by following directions in a book that ended a few miles away and said “stop here and ask for help”. It’s...remote. Very remote. I ended up getting lost, driving over some barbed wire stretched across a gravel road, and driving past a family living out of a tent. Very, very remote.

I figured someone would be interested in the blue car, so I could justify posting the orange TJ.

While I appreciate a good patina as much as anyone, there’s also something to be said for a clean truck.

Kinja'd!!!

Very, very far away, but this Comanche looks quite clean.

Kinja'd!!!

The river is the highlight, but sadly barely visible from this overlook. The best overlook is around the corner, but it’s a cabin for rent and they actively discourage trespassing.

Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!!

Photos don’t work well for this, but this is a very steep climb. Sadly private property; someday I’d like to try to find out whose, and get permission to try climbing it.

Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!!

This is the second time in 3-4 years that an auto, yellow LJ has sat on this lot in this exact spot. I have to suspect it’s the same LJ.

Looks like an awesome trip! Who knew Indiana had so much to offer. I drive through it all the time, but never considered it to be a “beautiful” state, guess you proved me wrong.

Depends on where you go. Northern Indiana is, well, flat and mostly agricultural, which isn’t the usual combination for pretty pictures. And the contours that do exist don’t show up much from t he interstate highways.

Ooh, Studebaker. Commander I believe.

Great photos here. Those winding rural dirt roads look like a lot of fun to cruise.

I think I spied a bear’s natural habitat * . A Studebaker.

*According to The Muppet Movie anyway.
